View in the Alps
Donald Shaw MacLaughlan (1876-1938)
Original drawing in pencil and watercolor, 169 x 214 mm., signed and dated in pencil. Maclaughlan, born in Canada but trained in the U.S., was one of the earliest American etchers to travel through Europe for his subject matter and his etchings, drawings and watercolors are filled with an almost palpable excitement at what he is seeing. He made several hundred etchings, though his drawings and watercolors are less frequently seen. This small gem is in his later, free, almost hurried stye but conveys the full splendor of snow-laden Alps. Perhaps no artist has expressed quite such excitement at seeing them since Brueghel.
