Veduta del tempio della Sibilla in Tivoli

Giovanni Battista PIRANESI
Date
1761
Description

Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). Etching and engraving, 421 x 640 mm., Hind 61 i/v, from the Vedute di Roma. A very fine impression of the rare first state, with the price and address, and before any numbers, on heavy laid paper with large, full margins. The Temple of the Sibyl or the Temple of Vesta (left, in the image) at Tivoli, outside of Rome, remains today one of the great sights of Italy, particularly when seen illuminated at night. The structure at the right (sometimes itself referred to as the Temple of the Siby) is another ancient building, once later used as a church. The two stand on elevated ground overlooking the falls of the Aniene River.
