Vase de profil

From a set of six. Préaud 1938, first state of three.
A very fine impression with wide margins all round. Light foxing and discolouration at the edges of these, otherwise in very good condition. 284 x 222mm.

Lepautre was an endless font of design ideas, either for decorative objects or interiors. His elaborate vase with
a motif of Neptune driving his chariot could have been carried out either in metal on a small scale, or in stone for a garden setting. Its ambiguity of scale is emphasized by the seascape with a shipwreck which compliments the theme in the background. The idea for fantastical vases of this sort originated in the early 16th Century.
