The Virgin and Child with John the Baptist and Angels in the Clouds
Giovanni Battista de Cavalieri (1526-1597) after Livio Agresti
A very fine impression of this apparently rare engraving after a drawing by Livio Agresti (ca 1505/10-1579), laid down over a century ago and trimmed to an arched top. It is impossible to see more than a bit of the platemark, but it appears to be approximately 385 x 259 mm. The composition is complete with some margin. The verso bears the collector's signature of Fountaine Walker (Lugt 4240) and the date 1857. Agresti was a mannerist artist who worked in his native town of Forli and in Rome. The British Museum owns the original drawing by Agresti but does not own an impression of the print. The drawing is in the same direction, slightly smaller and has the same arched top, further indicating that the print is complete.
The print bears the names of both artists, the inventor as Livius Furlin, the engraver as Joannes Baptista de'Cavalerius. There is a small "bite" out of the paper at the lower left going just to the platemark.
