Godefroy, Hollstein 46, the very rare first state of six
A fine, subtle, early impression, with thread margins most of the way round or trimmed along the platemark. A very pale brown spot in the foreground, a thin spot in the lower right corner, otherwise in excellent condition. 181 x 159mm.
There can be no better source for the accurate details of daily life in the Dutch 17th Century, especially among the relatively poor, than Van Ostade's prints and paintings. The family seen in this celebrated etching is probably fairly comfortable compared to many, though far from bourgeois. Van Ostade relates what he sees without sentimentality or pity, often with a touch of humour, as in the dog successfully begging at the table.
