Solace

Lawrence Gipe
Date
1995
Description

The dramatic juxtaposition of the steaming train engine in this image and the title words which are silkscreened onto the bottom edge pronouncing “Solace” jar the viewer into a sense of unease. The key plate was made as a sand-blasted aquatint and the artist “erased” all the lighter areas and whites, almost like drawing with white chalk on black paper. Lawrence Gipe was an influential artist on the LA scene in the late 80’s and continues to create elegiac paintings today.
