After Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre (1714-89), this is a
companion piece to La Peinture after François Boucher
Inventaire du Fond Français 2 II ; Portalis & Béraldi II p.453.
A fine, three-dimensional impression with small margins all round. A printer’s crease in the lower right plate margin, a little dust-marking, otherwise in very good condition. 379 x 275mm.
Female engravers often worked semi-anonymously in the workshop of a male engraver, generally either a relative or a teacher. Thus far no information has emerged as to Marie Madeleine’s life and training. She seems to have had some entrée into Boucher’s milieu, engraving five plates after his designs, among them the above-mentioned companion piece to this print, La Peinture. Le Blanc knew of only seven plates by her hand, but the British Museum possesses another two. The pair of studio scenes of 1752 are her best achievements. Very rare.
