Description

"In A Modern Rendering The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann: A Catalogue Raisonné" was written by Gala Chamberlain and is accompanied with a foreword by Martin Krause and essays by Nancy E. Green and Thomas Leech. This book was underwritten by the Ann Baumann Trust, printed by Trifolio in Italy, and published by Rizzoli Electa in 2019. The raisonné has already been sold out but the author has a limited number of volumes available, these with a specially designed slipcase made by Trifolio. These can be signed by the author.

This 648 page raisonné illustrates in color and describes Gustave Baumann's 190 editioned color woodcuts, color linocuts, and etchings, as well as over 200 pieces of printed ephemera. The chronology section is illustrated with many never-before-published photographs from Baumann's archive. The section on collections highlights the major repositories of Baumann's work followed by a listing of museums and libraries holding his work in the United States. The exhibition section begins in 1900 and continues to 2017. This book is a must for every collector, museum, and library.

The American Institute of Graphic Arts selected "In A Modern Rendering The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann: A Catalogue Raisonné" as one of the winners of "50 Books | 50 Covers" for 2020. These awards began in 1923 and in 1941 Baumann's book "Frijoles Canyon Pictographs" was named a winner of "Fifty Books of the Year."

This monumental publication allows for an unprecedented appreciation of one of the finest color woodblock artists of the twentieth century.
