Sir Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910)
A very fine impression of one of Haden's most elegant prints on thick laid paper with full margins and signed in pencil. Fulham is in southwest London on the Thames. Haden was an eminent surgeon who took up etching (and print collecting) as a hobby and become one of the most eminent and influential figures in the etching revival. The Harrington catalog lists the print as No. 19, but this state is after the last one described by him. The later Schneiderman catalog lists it as No. 22 xii/xii or perhaps a later still undescribed state, for there are reputed to be one or more states after Schneiderman's last. Haden sometimes worked his plates past their optimum appearance, but he seems to have done nothing but make this one more attractive with each succeeding state.
