Curious About America
Raúl Gonzalez was born in El Paso, Texas and grew up going back and forth between El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, México. He is a recipient of the prestigious Pura Belpre award in illustration from the American Library Association for his work on Lowriders to the Center of the Earth in 2017. In 2009 Gonzalez received an award from the Artadia Foundation for Art and Culture. He was voted Boston’s best visual artist for 2010 by readers of The Boston Phoenix. In 2013 Center Street Studio invited Raul to make a pair of etchings, a medium he had not used before. This print is the first of the two, full of the iconography and symbolism found in his exquisite drawings. The plate was printed with a sepia ink with a chine collé stained with Mexican coffee in an edition of 25.
