Allegorical Homage to Pope Benedict XIV
Not described by LeBlanc, Nagler, or the Inventaire du Fonds français
Watermark : Fleur-de-lis ( ?) in single circle
Provenance : F. Heugel (Lugt 3373)
A fine, rich impression, trimmed on the platemark all round, with plate margin intact. Remains of old hinges on the verso, otherwise in very good condition. 255 x 174mm.
Lorrain’s printed oeuvre was small, only fifteen known to LeBlanc, not including this plate, and of these just half were original compositions. In the following year he made an etching dealing with the Iliad which was dedicated to Benedict XIV, doubtless because of his stature as a scholar and supporter of the arts.
