Le Bain

Félix Vallotton (1865-1925). Fine impression, 135 x 85 mm., Vallotton & Goerg 144, on laid paper with full margins, as contained in a copy of The Chap Book for December 15, 1894 (lacking the front cover) in fresh condition.. This woodcut was printed ONLY in The Chap Book. V & G note that they had never seen an actual impression of the print, nor was there one in the Vallotton studio sale, although the drawing was included. Though printed in a large, commercial edition, the print has become quite scarce and rarely appears on the market. It is mentioned in Vallotton's papers as "woodcut for Mr. Rhodes," and is an original print, not a photo-mechanical reproduction, even though it is titled in the publication "A DRAWING BY F. VALLOTON" (sic), and it is probably the only original print ever published in The Chapbook. Vallotton, who worked in both Switzerland and France and was both a painter and print maker, was a notable member of the group of artists called the Nabis during the 1890s. His development of a completely new style of woodcut brought him international fame and was highly influential on his contemporaries and followers.
