Saint Thomas

Martin (ca. 1435-1491) SCHONGAUER
circa 1480

A very fine, rich and clear impression of this image, from Schongauer's set of The Apostles, 90 x 50 mm., on thin laid paper without watermark (TIB notes that none of the series has a watermark as the sheets are too small), trimmed almost exactly on the plate mark, a shade inside at the right and bottom, which is visible and inky at the top. Lehrs estimates that about 40 impressions survive, all of which show the pentimento of the saint's foot, though some are worn and grey. Thomas bears a lance as the instrument of his martyrdom. Schongauer prints are of considerable rarity on the market today, and fine, early impressions even moreso.
