Madonna and Child with Angels
Bartsch 2; Bohlin 3, first state of three; TIB vol 39, 004, second state of four with address of Petrus Stephanonis. (It is uncertain if the first state before any address recorded by Leblanc and Andresen exists.) Later the addresses of Orlandi and Van Aelst are substituted.
Provenance: Prince Jean Cantacuzène (Lugt 4030); unidentified mark (JJS)
A very good impression with thread margins all round. Old pencil inscriptions and hinges on the verso, small repairs in three corners, generally in good condition. 164 x 119mm.
A preparatory drawing in the BM is partly incised for transfer. Described as a “sensitive work”, this print was the most popular and frequently-mentioned of Ludovico’s four autograph prints, all depicting the Virgin and child, one dated 1592, another 1604.
