Description

CLAUDE GELLÉE (called LE LORRAIN)
Chamagne (Duchy of Lorraine) 1600 – 1682 Rome

"Harbour Scene with Rising Sun", 1634 (Le Soleil levant)

Etching. 13.5 x 20.1 cm
Signed on the plank in the foreground: CLA

Literature: Robert-Dumesnil 15; Duplessis 15; Blum 10; IFF 10; Mannocci 15

A thus far unrecorded state, following upon Mannocci’s finale eighth state. The inscription “CLAUDIUS. Claudius inv. et F. Romae – sup. Licentia” removed but traces remain visible in the lower right margin. Entire plate uniformly reworked, most notably the foreground and middle ground on the right, as can be seen in the shadows of the tower and the boat.

Very fine impression, evenly printed on laid paper and ample margins all around, otherwise in good condition.
