St. Thomas

Albrecht DURER

Meder 50 b/d, with the light scratches above the rock at left, but before the one crossing the lance.
A very fine, crisp impression with the drapery very three-dimensional, trimmed on or just outside the platemark all round. A reinforced thin spot upper left, a possible very small repair at the left edge, both very skilfully restored. Otherwise in very good condition. 117 x 74mm.

Durer embarked on what was intended as a set of the twelve Apostles, engraving St. Paul in the same year as St. Thomas. Two further saints were completed, in 1523 and 1526 respectively. Martin Schoengauer's set of Apostles of ca. 1480 are believed to have been the inspiration.
