A Sibyl reading
After Michelangelo. Printed in black ink on blue paper mounted on its original laid paper support sheet with drawn borderlines. LeBlanc III, 34, 14. With a letterpress inscription on the base of the Sibyl’s chair
A fine impression on a full sheet. The deckle edges of the support a little creased, otherwise in excellent condition. 390 x 252mm.
Skippe is here evoking the effect of the chiaroscuro drawing on tinted paper that was popular in the 16th Century. He also made three-block chiaroscuro woodcuts as a part of an 18th Century revival of interest in that technique.
