Black and White Etchings

Long before color was introduced to printmaking, in Asia first, and specifically in Japan, and later in Europe and the United States, graphic artists were compelled to render reality exactingly, or atmospherically, or evocatively, using black ink only.  The artistic talent assigned to the creator was predicated on their ability to render such elements using just the grayscale afforded by line and dot.  The group of prints explores this feat.  You will find prints dating from many centuries and most locations in the world where etching has been practiced.
